    In this workshop, you'll be informed by a certified Japanese tea instructor about types of Japanese tea as well as how to brew the tea properly.

    About the teacher: Harumi Oshitani from Okei-san, Japanese Tea Plus is a certified Japanese tea instructor as well as a qualified tea education instructor who is based in Melbourne. One of her passion is to share her knowledge and experience with local people and to introduce a good quality Japanese tea in Australia.     Come and enjoy tanka poetry from Melbourne’s Japanese community in a special event with Mel-Tanka-Kai (Melbourne Tanka Group), Myron Lysenko, Dr Grant Caldwell and Dr Elizabeth Beaton.

    The Melbourne Tanka Group poets will share some of their work which has been translated for a new anthology, reading in Japanese with the English translation displayed simultaneously. There will be accompanying readings of haiku, senryu, and other poetry by Myron Lysenko, Dr Grant Caldwell and Dr Elizabeth Beaton. The Yukari Echo Japanese Women's Choir will perform.

    The Calligraphy Society is pleased to welcome acclaimed artist and teacher, Junko Azukawa to teach "Japanese Brush Strokes with Sumi Ink". 

    In this course you will learn to feel and capture the meaning of objects from nature with your interpretation then you will express the objects variously with brush pressure, rhythm, tones and confidence in your strokes. You'll not only learn brush stroke techniques but also experience the whole process and understand yourself through your work.

    All materials will be provided by the tutor at a cost of $5. Please bring $5 in cash to the workshop

    All welcome, including CSV members and the general public.

    About the tutor:

    With 40 years experience, Shoko Mafune is a talent ceramicist. Early in her career Shoko completed a 4 year apprenticeship under a Japanese potter before going to Australia. Since then, Shoko has exhibited her artworks in Japan, Philippines and Australia. Shoko has been teaching her very popular pottery classes at YCC since 2012, with glowing reviews from all her students.

    Udon Know How Much We Love Koshu!  by Supernormal Canteen

    Long-time friend and collaborator of Andrew McConnell’s, Phillip Moraghan (previously of Curly Flat Winery) and his wife Rika Shimo-Moraghan are giving us an insight into their favourite Japanese grape - Koshu.

    Koshu's a white wine grape, native to the Yamanashi Prefecture in Japan. It produces fresh, fragrant wines that are an excellent match for Japanese cuisine. You'll have the opportunity to taste a range of wines made from native Japanese grapes - from sparkling through to red - matched with a distinctive menu developed by Andrew and Head Chef, Tim Goegan.

    Dinner will be rounded out with a flight of Japanese whisky (including perrenial favourite Nikka) to complement dessert.

    Tickets are $125 and cover all food and beverage.
